Prominent Ear Correction Surgery

Prominent Ears are usually caused by a lack of the fold in the curve of the ear, or a deep bowl just in front of the ear hole. Correction involves re-shaping and re-positioning the ears in order to set them back closer to the head. It does not change the size of the ear itself.

Less common is that the ear protrudes because the shape of the ear is constricted; the outside of the ear is not long enough and the ear therefore folds forwards. Mr Price will advise you if this is the case; you will need to see an ear reconstruction expert and Mr Price will be able to advise you who best to see.

The operation for ‘normal’ prominent ear correction takes place through an incision behind the ear and, rarely, a small incision in front of the ear. The cartilage is re-shaped and, where necessary, a small piece removed. The incision is sutured with dissolving stitches and a head bandage put on.

After the operation, your ears will be glued to the side of your head and a lightweight bandage applied, which stays in position for 24 hours. At that time you can use an elasticated neoprene ear protector. This is to stop you folding the ear out and adversely affecting the result. Mr Price will be able to talk you through this aspect of your care when you meet.
