Botulinum Injections

Botulinum toxin is one of the two groups of injectable treatments for wrinkles, as well as sweating in the armpits. There are a number of brands available including Botox® and Vistabel®. Mr Price tends to use Botox® but can, with notice, order any brand if you have a strong preference.

In the face, the injections act by stopping the signal from the nerve to the muscle, thereby preventing the muscle from contracting. When used very carefully, this can decrease the appearance of furrows and wrinkles, particularly on the forehead and around the eyes.

Botulinum injections can also be used for other applications, for example sweating under the armpits, migraines or for certain neuromuscular disorders.

After the procedure, you may experience slight redness and/or bruising at the injection sites. There will be no immediate effect upon your wrinkles but they should start to relax over the next few days, with maximum effect about 2-3 weeks later. The muscle recovers after several months and so the injections may need repeating after 3-4 months to maintain benefit.

Because the injection prevents muscles from working, recognised problems with the procedure include droopiness of the eyebrow or eyelid. Both of these wear off at the same time as the other injections, so they are not permanent.
